Making a few simple changes in your daily routine can help you stay on top of drying winter skin and keep it soft, supple, and protected.
For starters, when taking a bath or shower, keep them short. Hot water strips the essential natural oils from your skin, drying it out. Limit yourself to a single 5- or 10-minute warm shower or bath. Choose a shower gel that is unscented, soap-free, gentle, or contains mild cleansing agents. These will be the least likely to exacerbate dry skin problems.
When you pop out of the shower or bath, pat your skin damp and then apply body oil or a rich emollient moisturizer right away. Your skin will absorb creamy lotions best within 5 minutes after washing and the cream will get absorbed better.
When it comes to moisturizers, read labels and look for certain ingredients. Ceramides help skin retain water and soothe dry winter skin. Dimethicone and glycerin draw water to the skin and keep it from evaporating out. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts water helping to hydrate your skin. Lanolin, mineral, and petroleum jelly are other ingredients that can be used to help skin hold on to the water absorbed during bathing or showering.
In addition to changing your daily regimen and using a fragrance-free moisturizer, here are a few more tips we want to share with you. Use a humidifier at home to keep skin hydrated during dry, winter months. Drink plenty of water and eat foods loaded with Omega-3. Essential fatty acids can be found in cold-water fish like salmon and halibut, flax, walnuts, and safflower oil. EFAs help to fortify your skin’s natural oil-retaining barriers.
The Anushka skin expert team recommends applying sunscreen on all exposed parts of your body with an SPF 30 or higher every day – even when the sun isn’t shining. One of our faves is I/S Clinical ECLIPSE SPF 50.
