We have all instinctively learned from an early age that the touch of a hand can ease the pain. For example, think back to your youthful years, instinctively when you banged your knee while riding your bike, you would instantly rub the sore spot. Now think to today, after sitting at your desk for hours, you develop a tension sore spot in your shoulder, instinctively you once again rub the sore spot.
At Anushka Spa & Salon, we place an emphasis on the healing power of well-trained hands. If we think about the variety of cultures using massage to relieve pain, it is no wonder that it has become a highly desired option for pain relief.
While massage has often taken a back seat to modern medicine, a growing number of our clients are returning to their roots of hands-on natural relief.
According to a survey by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), about 25 percent of adults had had a massage at least once in the past 12 months, and 50 percent used massage therapy for health-related reasons, such as relief for pain or stiffness.
While we understand the importance of modern medicine at Anushka Spa & Salon especially in our Cosmedical Centre, we are advocates for alternative medicine when it comes to pain.
More than 70 percent of Rheumatologist has expressed referring their patients to massage therapist such as those at Anushka Spa & Salon. In addition, AMTA surveys show that two-thirds of Americans would like their health insurance to cover massage therapy.
If you or someone you know is suffering from brief or chronic pain, it may be time to give massage therapy a try. Modern medicine works to treat the immediate problem when it comes to pain rather than the long term.
With minor aches and pains in aside, we do recommend seeking an evaluation from your doctor for any underlying pain conditions prior to your massage therapy appointment, as pain can be an indicator of a more serious problem. Also, before you climb into the massage chair or lie down on the table, you’ll probably want answers to a few questions.
How Does Massage Therapy Ease Pain?
Massage has the ability to ease pain in a multitude of ways. Our massage therapists at Anushka Spa & Salon will review your concern areas to address your specific needs prior to beginning your massage.
Massage therapy can improve your quality of life by increasing blood flow to sore, stiff joints and muscles which are actually warmed from the extra circulation.
Studies suggest that massage speeds up the flow of oxytocin, a hormone produced that relaxes muscles and encourages feelings of calmness and contentment.
Fun Fact: Oxytocin is the hormone produced by women during labor. This hormone works to relax the uterus to cement the bond between mother and baby. This hormone is actually often called the “love hormone”.
Massage actually changes the way your brain senses the pain. As Stanford neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky has said, the short, sharp sensations of a good massage can temporarily make the brain forget about other aches.
How Effective is Massage for Pain Relief ?
We are sure you know from experience, there is no doubt that a little massage does wonders for your aches and pains when it comes to stressed, overworked muscles. Believe it or not, there is growing evidence that consistent massage regimens are linked to decreased chronic pain especially in the lower back.
A study of 262 patients published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that massage was far superior to acupuncture or patient education for relieving back pain. After 10 weeks, 74 percent of patients said massage was “very helpful.”
Only 46 percent for those who received acupuncture and about 17 percent of those who read a self-help book had the same response. Massage patients were also four times less likely than other patients to report being bedridden with pain. The authors concluded that “massage might be an effective alternative to conventional medical care for persistent back pain.”
At Anushka Spa & Salon we have seen this ring true for many of our clients on a true massage regimen at least once every three weeks.
A study of more than 1,200 patients at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management found that massage reduces symptoms such as anxiety, nausea, and pain by about 50 percent.
Is Massage Safe?
Massage is a go-to safe option when performed by an experienced, licensed professional such as those at Anushka Spa & Salon.
At Anushka Spa & Salon our therapists are licensed and trained to perform a variety of massage treatments to help reduce your chronic pain.
We do not recommend massage therapy for those with deep, painful vein thrombosis, burns skin infections, eczema, open wounds, broken bones or osteoporosis.
We recommend cancer patient consulting with their oncologist as there may be a greater risk for certain adverse effects, such as hemorrhage or the dislodging of blood clots.
At Anushka Spa & Salon we offer prenatal massages for expecting mothers to reduce the aches and pains that frequently accompany pregnancy. We do, however, recommend waiting until the second trimester. Our massage therapists that perform prenatal massage have been certified to do so by the state.
If you feel pain during a therapy session, tell your massage therapist immediately. You’re the expert on whether the treatment is helping or worsening your pain.

While there is no clear evidence to say which type of massage works best, we do recommend our European Massage for beginners as there should always be a starting point for your pain management regimen.
When you call to book your appointment at Anushka Spa & Salon you will want to be sure to let your booking specialist know that you are seeking alternative medicine for your chronic or acute pain. When you arrive at your appointment your massage therapist will go over any questions, concerns or problem areas to specifically address.
Before you leave based on your results, you can speak with your massage therapist about the best regimen moving forward.
