What Is A Weft?

A hair weft, in its basic form, is a collection of hair strands sewn onto a super-thin cloth strip ready for your stylist to work into your hair. How the hair forms an attachment to that strip varies, however. Some will be machine sewn whereas others get sewn by hand. Both have their benefits, although, depending on your hair type, one may be better for you than the other.

For example, hand-tied wefts are somewhat more delicate. You cannot cut them but they are much lighter. Machine sewn wefts, however, you can cut, but they’re much heavier and often thicker at the seam.

Which Weft Extensions Are Right For Your Hair Type?

Those with finer locks will find hand-tied wefts a much better fit as they’re lighter weight won’t pull on the hair. Additionally, it’s worth taking into consideration the attachment method. Those with very fine locks are better candidates for tapes in for example. These put much less pressure on the hair without the need for braids or sewing into them. This can be tricky with thinner strands and sometimes ends up being visible.

If your hair is thicker, hand-tied sew-in or weave extensions will be perfect for you. You will also be able to choose from hand-tired or machine sewn wefts. Your stylist will create a braided section through the hair, the wefts will then be sewn in by hand. As your strands and volume are more prominent, your locks can take the weight. Plus, these extensions will last you up to 9 weeks! Additionally, your technician will be able to advise on the weight needed for your specific hair thickness.

What Are The Different Types Of Weft Extension Attachment Methods?

Once you’ve decided between hand-tied or machine sewn wefts, you’ll need to select the method for attaching them. Below we’ve listed some of the most popular options (aside from weaved and hand-tied extensions) with a short description of each!

Tape-In Extensions

Tape in hair extensions are a semi-permanent attachment method. They use a thin strip of glue that sits directly on top of the hair, instantly adhering to your natural locks. These will last you around 6-8 weeks.

Clip In Hair Extensions

Clip-in hair extensions are best for those wanting a quick boost of volume or length with the option to take them in and out. They last for as long as you keep them in, usually up the one year mark. that said, we don’t suggest leaving them in for long periods, or overnight. This can quickly stress out your strands causing breakage and dryness.

Bond Hair Extensions

These extensions attach using a heat tool that bonds each small extension weft to your natural hair at the root. The heater heats a special resin that fuses with your natural strands lasting up to six months when properly taken care of.

Micro links are great for those wishing to steer clear of glue and heat. This method attaches the wefts by inserting tiny sections of both your natural hair and hair extensions through tiny beads. The beads also clamp shut using a plier tool which secures the hair in place. This method lasts for around 3/4 months.

What Should I Look Out For In Ethically Sourced, Quality Hair Wefts

When it comes to choosing your hair extension provider, the options can be overwhelming. It seems every company out there offers something unique and impressive! But, take care. Do your research, make sure the company you choose, ethically sources their hair. Just like Platinum Seamless. Make sure you’ll meet with a licensed, experienced professional before you part with your time and money.

In terms of the hair itself, always look out for Remy hair. This will be natural hair meaning it’s sourced from real human hair which keeps the cuticle intact on the collection of the hair. This makes for much softer strands that are shinier and more beautiful when mixed with your own natural hair. You can also wash the hair and heat-style as you would with your hair.
