Under Eye Revive

Dr. Bonnie Marting, DNP, APRN shares non-invasive solutions for one of the most requested treatments in her practice to reverse dark circles and restore eyes.

Everyone ages differently, and usually, there are telltale signs such as skin wrinkling, or in the case of our topic today, under eye hollowing. But these “signs” may not always tell an accurate truth, since under eye hollows can affect pretty much anyone.

In some cases, under eye hollows are simply heredity. The vessels beneath the eyes show through the very delicate skin of that area, leaving a dark appearance. Or in other cases, insufficient fat in the compartments under the eye can lead to this appearance. For those with a chronic case of under eye hollows, whether due to natural aging or genetics, our goal is to replenish the area so that “positive” light can reflect off of the under-eye area, rather than “negative” light.

Positive Light Reflection

In most people, sufficient fat under the eye allows that area to reflect light the same way as the cheek does. So, when that fat layer decreases due to the aging process, dark circles begin to appear. My “Under Eye Revive” treatment is a novel procedure that reduces the appearance of hollows under the eyes by replenishing volume to regain “positive light reflection”.

The Procedure

The “fix” for this is filling the area under the eyes with one of two products that work best for those areas.

The first treatment is performed utilizing a cannula. A cannula is a blunt-tipped needle-like device that does not perforate skin. A tiny port hole is made toward the outer area of the undereye, and the cannula is inserted through this small hole and a specialized form of filler is injected into the area. The procedure is quick and easy, and there is little to no discomfort. The cannula positioning feels a bit odd to the person experiencing it for the first time, but it is not painful. And because it is not a needle, there usually is no bruising.

The area under the eye looks greatly improved immediately. There is, however, a chance for swelling in the next couple of mornings after sleeping with the head in a dependent position. For most, it is not necessary to sleep with the head elevated. The risk of early morning swelling diminishes within just a few days.

Red Light Therapy

I’ve recently starting adding this combination treatment immediately after injection to improve under eye revive results. Following the insertion of dermal filler, I have my clients relax into a session of Red Light Therapy to boost healing and improve overall cellular repair for even better results.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, “Red light therapy is hypothesized to work by acting on the “power plant” in your body’s cells called mitochondria. With more energy, other cells can do their work more efficiently, such as repairing skin, boosting new cell growth and enhancing skin rejuvenation. More specifically, certain cells absorb light wavelengths and are stimulated to work.

The mitochondria are organelles found in large numbers in many cells, where energy production occurs. It is thought that red light therapy may stimulate collagen production, the skin’s building blocks.” The use of Red Light Therapy is growing immensely in the skin care industry, and shows great possibility for other medical uses.

While studies are currently being conducted to demonstrate that this theory is accurate, I have anecdotally seen vast improvement in patient’s skin and results after several treatments.
