For many women at Anushka Spa & Salon the secret to smooth, shiny hair sits at the end of any one of our fabulous keratin treatments. The de-frizzing process has never been more attainable. But what does it actually do, and how long will it truly last?
There are so many questions we receive surrounding keratin treatments at Anushka Spa & Salon located at City Place in West Palm Beach, FL, so we created a quick guide to run through it all for you!
What Is A Keratin Treatment?
A Keratin treatment is a specially formulated chemical process that not only smooths but also shines frizzy hair! Results typically last up to six months following the treatment. At Anushka hair salon, we offer many different versions of the treatment. Your hairstylists can customize a formula specifically suited for your needs.
Some versions of hair smoothing treatments release formaldehyde when heated, but our newest versions that we offer are now formaldehyde-free!
Essentially, with or without the formaldehyde, at a very basic level of understanding, our keratin treatments dive deep into the hair follicle and inject the porous areas with keratin. Keratin is an essential protein for healthy hair.
Your only one call away from a healthier hair appearance by eliminating frizz!
Can You Walk Me Through The Process?
The amount of time the entire process will take is dependent on the formula your hairstylist at Anushka Spa & Salon is using as well as your hair type and how much hair you have. Typically, your keratin smoothing treatment will take anywhere from two to four hours.
When you arrive, your stylist will first take you to the shampoo station and wash your hair with our fabulous sulfate free shampoo. Then your stylist will either apply your formula of keratin treatment to your wet hair allowing the formula to saturate each strand for approximately 30 minutes. Or depending on the level of damaged hair your stylist may then blow dry you and apply the treatment.
Your stylist will then take a flat iron after your keratin complex will apply low to medium heat using a flat iron to seal the straightening treatment to smooth the hair. Then you’re done! All you need to do is sit back and relax.
Is It Different From A Chemical Relaxer?
Yes, absolutely. Unlike straightening chemical relaxers that are permanent, keratin treatments are temporary and wash out after a few months. Both treatments require different ingredients that create different results.
Chemical relaxers use a mixture of the following ingredients to break and restructure the bonds in curly hair resulting in weaker but straight hair: sodium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or guanidine hydroxide.
Keratin on the other hand actually injects the porous parts of your hair with protein to create the smooth texture you desire. While it does wash out after a few months, it does not weaken your hair. After a few months, the keratin treatment will wash out, unlike the chemical relaxer.

Can I Do This At Home?
To answer honestly, yes, but do not expect the same results you will see at Anushka Spa & Salon. In order to achieve semi-similar results, you will need to buy the right products. Your options may be limited as some products are not available over-the-counter.
Not all products are created equally. Just because a treatment contains the word “keratin” does not actually mean they are keratin products. All hair is actually made up of “keratin proteins,” hence the exuberant number of products claiming the keratin name.
To get the best experience for your at home keratin treatment, you will want to look at the product’s ingredient list. A majority of smoothing treatments contain intensive amounts of silicone and conditioner. After you’ve examined the ingredients, take a look at the instructions. If the instructions do not give explicit directions on how to wash, dry and straighten your hair, you most likely have a standard conditioning product.
If you do end up with a keratin product, it is highly likely that the results will not nearly last as long as results from a salon such as Anushka Spa & Salon. Compared to in-salon treatments lasting up to several months, at-home keratin treatments typically last a few weeks.
Is It Safe?
Ever since the release of formaldehyde-free treatments, Anushka Spa & Salon can safely say this product is much safer. In previous products, formaldehyde even with its small amount is a carcinogen and should be avoided when possible. While formaldehyde-free products do not last quite as long, safety is also very important.
