Is Your New Year’s Resolution Aging you?

with Dr. Bonnie Marting, DNP, APRN, Nurse Practitioner of the Anushka MedSpa

According to Forbes Health, 38% of people who make New Year’s resolutions vow to lose weight. It climbs to 54% among the baby boomers’ resolutions. Baby boomers are now aged 59-76. This matters because we lose fat in our faces anyway, even without intentional weight loss. Most of the time, this fat loss in the face is noticeable after one turns 40. Combining that with weight loss, the effect is even more dramatic. The unintentional consequence of hitting your weight loss goal is losing even more fat in the face – that which would otherwise result in a more youthful appearance.

Facial fat both descends, and decreases, making the face look hollow and a bit sad. This loss and descent also increases the sagginess of the skin. There is now too much skin for the foundation underneath it. And the skin that exists has much less elastin and collagen than it did when it was younger. The skin becomes dull looking, jowling appears, and the neck begins to sag.

How To Fix Facial Fat Loss

Thankfully, today there are many non-surgical ways to correct these issues that come naturally with time or in combination with weight loss. The fat that is lost can be replaced with robust hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that replenish the soft, positive look that once existed. Juvéderm Voluma™ is a well-known facial filler that will address the loss and return the balance of a more youthful face.

How To Fix Sagging Skin

For the sagging, jowling, or skin elasticity loss, a PDO Thread Lift can “realign” the tissue to reduce excess skin and return the jawline to a smoother presentation without sutures or surgery. The procedure is completed in under an hour and pain-free through the use of an anesthetic injected prior to the insertion. The greatest thing about PDO Threads is that they are biodegradable and biocompatible. Even more amazing is that they stimulate your body to create new collagen around them. This new collagen is tightly wound and enhances the effect of the lifting achieved by their placement in the first place. The result is that your results get better and better in time – not the other way around.

The Physical & Mental Connection

While improving appearance is always high on our resolution list, the most common New Year’s resolution, according to Forbes, was to address mental health. In my profession, I can assure you that improving your appearance without managing emotional struggles will not lead to improved overall self-esteem.

The majority of the respondents to this resolution were Gen Z’ers, but other groups added this one also, underscoring the increased awareness of the importance of mental health. According to the National Health Service of the UK, ways to improve mental health are:

  • Connect with other people in person. Good relationships are so important!
  • Be physically active. Not only do you increase your health but you stimulate brain chemicals that increase your wellbeing and self-esteem.
  • Learning new skills. New skills can increase self-confidence as well as build a sense of purpose.
  • Give to others. Giving and generosity creates more positive effect on the giver than even the receiver.

Nothing helps your self-esteem and confidence like looking and feeling your best, and we are grateful to be able to offer cosmedical solutions to improve outer confidence as our clients work on their internal wellbeing.
