Lip Blush: Everything You Need to Know

There’s no denying the perfect pout is something just about everyone wants! While lip injections may have taken the spotlight in recent years when it comes to lip treatments, lip blush is something new that just might grab your interest even more.

Regardless of if you’re someone who has had lip injections before or you’re someone who has never done anything to their lips, lip blush is a great option to explore. Here’s everything you need to know about lip blush from A to Z!

What is Lip Blush?

You can think of lip blush as a semi-permanent tattoo for your lips. Color ink is deposited into the lips and along the lip line to help enhance both their color and shape of them.

Lip blush essentially creates the illusion that your lips are bigger than they really are rather than adding actual volume to them with something like injectables. The result is quite natural as your specialist will work with you to choose a lip shade that will enhance your lips without making them too bold.

Why Get Lip Blush?

Lip blush can provide tons of great benefits depending on who you are and what your goals are when it comes to the look of your lips. Whether it’s the look of a fuller pout you’re going for, or the desire to even out the pigmentation in your lips, there are tons of great reasons to try it out. Lip Blush: Your Questions Answered

Whether you’ve heard about the trend or not, you’re likely here because you want to learn more about the ins and outs of lip blush. We compiled our answers to each of the commonly asked questions about lip blush so you can ensure you know everything about it before you decide whether or not it’s the right option for you. Read on!

How does it work?

A good place to start is with a thorough understanding of how lip blush works.

Your specialist will use a tiny blade to make small cuts in the skin on your lips which then deposits ink into each cut. As you go, you can decide how many colors you want to add in order to get the darkness and/or fullness you’re going for.

You can enhance certain parts of your lips such as your cupid’s bow or lower lip and make them more symmetrical.

Once you’re finished, your technician will walk you through what you need to do for aftercare and help you develop a plan for your next treatments.

Will I get to choose my shade?

One of the best things about lip blush is that you get to choose the shade of your lips! You might be someone who wants to go for something more natural or someone who wants to change their lip color altogether. Whatever it may be there are plenty of options for achieving the perfect shade and filling in different areas of your lips.

How to prepare for your lip blush treatment

To ensure you get the optimal results, it’s important you begin to prepare for your appointment several weeks ahead of time. It can also be a good idea to talk to your doctor before your appointment.

Keep your lips as hydrated as possible leading up to your appointment so you don’t arrive with any flakiness. Use a scrub and balm a few days before your appointment so the skin is as smooth and hydrated as possible.

It’s also best to avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours before your appointment.

Does lip blushing hurt?

The truth when it comes to lip blush is that everyone’s experience is slightly different in regard to the level of pain they feel. Some describe it as small pinches or scratches while others will find it slightly more painful.

Your specialist will use a topical numbing cream to help curb any pain you might experience during your treatment. Generally, those who choose to get lip blush don’t experience any major pain.

How permanent is lip blush?

In order to get an understanding of whether or not you want to try lip blushing, you likely want to know how long it’s going to last for you. The great news is lip blush can last anywhere between two to three years and will gradually fade as time goes on.

Your lips will eventually return to their natural color and will become much lighter over time. It’s a good idea to get a yearly touch-up in order to maintain the look you and your specialist have worked to create.

How does lip blush compare to permanent lip color?

Permanent makeup is something that’s been around for a long time, but what you will experience with lip blush is a lot different from the permanent makeup seen in the 90s! Technology has come a long way.

While you might have seen dark tattooed lip liners when it comes to permanent lip color, lip blush is a much more natural solution that works to complement the natural hue of your lip color. The goal is to enhance rather than cover.

Is lip blush safe?

Just like any tattoo you might get on your body, there are some potential side effects (which we’ll get into below). However, lip blush is generally going to be safe if your technician follows the proper cleaning and sterilization processes.

Can you go without lip makeup after your lip blush treatment?

Absolutely! You can think of lip blush as a lip stain or tinted balm. It’s meant to provide your lips with a flattering tint without being too overpowering.

You can also still wear any of the lipsticks or lip colors that you did before in order to change your look up just as you would before your treatment.

What are the potential side effects?

Just like any form of permanent makeup, there are some risks. For lip blush that includes things like potential infection, allergic reactions, or uneven application. That’s why it’s so important to ensure you find a specialist who has the experience and is guaranteed to do a great job!

You also may experience some swelling or redness, although these side effects are generally quite mild and require little downtime.

Once your treatment is complete, you’ll likely experience some peeling as the lip blush tattoo heals. This is a part all a part of the process!

What does aftercare look like?

Once the treatment is complete, it will take anywhere from five to 10 days to heal. After just 24 hours you’ll notice any swelling will start to go down and that any tenderness starts to lessen. You can use ice packs to help with this as well!

Water and wipes will be necessary to use to clean your lips, followed by an ointment that will help with the healing process. You will want to ensure your pout stays as hydrated as possible.

It’s a good idea to also hold off on touching your lips or using anything on them as well as working out for at least 24 hours.

Be aware your lips will start to peel, which may be tempting to pick. You will want to avoid picking or scrubbing away any of the flaky spots on your lips and instead let those spots come off naturally. Failure to do so could mean a loss in pigmentation or patchiness in color.
