Never has there been a time when looking great at the beach was so important. Between selfies, Instagram, and Tik-Tok, we all must be on our “A” game! And the good news is, even though there are “scary” stories about legacy butt augmentation treatments, the new way to enhance your derriere is both safe and effective. But before we get to that, let’s talk about why safe treatments are so important.
Booty enhancement traditionally has been accomplished by either implants, or by fat transfer. Butt implants have pretty much gone by the wayside due to rather dire complications arising at any time after implantation. And now, there may be a reason to forgo the fat transfer, also.
The FL Board of Medicine has now passed a statute that declares no surgeon can perform more than three liposuction-fat transfers in one day. The reason? They are citing surgeon fatigue, possibly resulting in the deaths of 10 women who received Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBLs) in the past three years in South Florida. The women died from fat embolisms, either to the lungs or the heart, resulting in death. The new decree states that fat transfer should be done under ultrasound guidance in order to avoid any larger vessels. Of course, the surgeons are fighting back.
As this report from The Multi-Society Task Force for Safety in Gluteal Fat Grafting explains:
“The unusually high mortality rate from this cosmetic procedure is estimated to be as high as 1:3000, greater than any other cosmetic surgery. The cause of mortality is uniformly fatal fat embolism due to fat entering the venous circulation associated with injury to the gluteal veins. In every patient who has died, at autopsy, fat was seen within the gluteal muscle.”
