Thicker Brows? Brush Up On These Alternatives To Microblading

Those dreaming of thicker, natural-looking brows have likely considered microblading at some point. However, though this semi-permanent makeup technique can look amazing and lasts for a substantial amount of time, it’s not for everyone. So, perhaps you’re looking for a technique that looks even more subtle by using your natural brows. Or, maybe you simply want to add to their length for additional thickness. Whichever is true for you, you need to know about these amazing alternatives to microblading!

What Is Microblading & Does It Hurt?

Simply, microblading is an artistic, tattoo style technique which uses a handheld tool. This tool makes tiny, hair-like needle scratches on the eyebrow, whilst simultaneously depositing semi-permanent dots of pigment into the skin. The results? Realistic looking brow hairs that fill out your natural, or thinning brows, or, the creation of new brows entirely if that’s what’s needed.

In terms of the pain involved, most describe it as discomfort rather than actual pain. Only small scratches are made, a little like fine paper cuts. However, it’s understandable that some may be put off by that thought alone so it’s always good to know what your other options are!

How Long Does Microblading Last, And How Much Does It Cost?

Though it seems like a tattoo, the results of microblading aren’t exactly permanent. That said, they do last a very long time. Those who choose this treatment can expect their new look brows to last anywhere between a year and a half, to three years. Usually, you’ll require a touch-up appointment around four weeks after your initial one. Then, further, touch-ups to keep those fine hairs looking as they did when you first got them done.

In terms of cost, as with most beauty procedures, what you pay will vary greatly from salon to salon. Booking in with a more experienced brow expert with amazing reviews will of course be a little pricier. For these appointments, it’s not unusual to spend upwards of $2000. Alternatively, you’ll certainly be able to find technicians that offer microblading at a lower price. However, with techniques involving needles, even tiny ones, it’s always best to do your research and go with the most experienced professionals!

Which Alternatives Are Available?

If all this talk of bills, needles, and semi-permanent makeup makes you uneasy, don’t worry. Going straight from penciling in the odd hair here and there having no control over how your brows look for up to 3 years (even if you love them), just isn’t for everyone. Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives out there to give you those fuller, feathery looking brows you’ve always wanted.

Use Makeup

Arguably the easiest and most obvious way to improve the perceived thickness of your brows is to use makeup. And, goodness knows, all of our favorite makeup brands have more than delivered on that front! We’ve lost count of the endless pomades, pencils, liners, and powders available to us these days.

Thankfully, most of these products are available at a reasonable price. Plus, they’re pretty straight forward to use. Whatever shade your brows are, whichever formula you prefer to use, you’ll most likely be able to find it.

The only downside of using makeup products for fuller brows is how long they last. You’ll be lucky to find one that stays put for longer than 24 hours. So, if you’re looking for something that lasts a little (or a lot) longer than that, keep reading!

Brow Lamination

Lamination

Where microblading is a sort of tattoo for your brows, lamination is a kind of perm for them. Don’t get us wrong, you’re not going to be walking around with curly eyebrow hair! The perm reference simply means your brows will be set into a distinct shape. A shape that will last for an extended time, similar to a perm!

This chemical processing takes around 40 minutes to an hour to complete, resulting in a seemingly fuller brow. During your appointment, your eyebrow technician will brush the hairs into the desired shape. Then, they will apply a neutralizing solution which makes the hairs softer and easier to shape. Finally, they’ll apply a laminating solution to set your brows into their new formation.

Lifting the hairs in this way works to fill out gaps and adds shape naturally without the use of makeup or pigment. A great alternative if you want your brows done, and then to not have to think about them daily! Additionally, you can expect your newly laminated brows to last for up to two months.

Brow Extensions

Extension

If you desired the feathered brow look, brow extensions could be for you! Now, don’t worry if you’re suddenly imagining curtain style bangs hanging over your eyes and obstructing your view! That’s the first place our minds went when we first heard these two words strung together too. Brow extensions, however, are definitely not that! Instead, think, eyelash extensions, but for your brows.

Unfortunately, as your brow technician needs to apply the brow extensions directly to your brows/skin, they’re not universally suitable. Therefore, those will oily skin around their brows may find this type of treatment won’t work for them.

The results are totally customizable in terms of length, thickness, and color. Therefore extensions are perfect whether you’re looking to fill in a gap or to totally transform your brows.

Unlike microblading or laminating your brows, this option, we’d say, is best chosen for special occasions only. Why? The maximum amount of time your extensions will last is around the 14-day mark. So, not exactly a long term solution. That said, they do look incredibly natural and amazingly feathery after application! Therefore, they’ll be perfect for weddings, parties, or photoshoots!
