This hairstyle is great for a few reasons. You won’t need to get a professional to do it for you, regardless of your level of hair styling expertise. And even if you do choose to get your stylist to do it, it’s a quick and easy style for them to create. This style also requires essentially no heat or hair tools other than a comb, elastic, and some bobby pins.

The flip bun updo always helps you to look put together and is even something you can do as a part of your daily routine.

Flip Bun Updo Tutorial

Ready to jump into the tutorial? You’re going to be shocked at just how easy it really is!

Step 1: Smooth your comb through the front of the hair and fasten it into a low ponytail.

Step 2: Loosen the ponytail by pulling on the hair elastic and split the hair above your hair elastic. You should almost end up with a hole between the hair at the bottom of the head.

Step 3: This is where the “flip” part of this hairstyle comes in! Flip the ponytail up and loop it through the hole you created. Tighten the flipped loop you created by dividing your ponytail in two and gently pulling each side.

Step 4: Take your comb and start to tease your ponytail in order to add volume to your bun. You can tease as much or as little as you like! Once you’re done with teasing, use your comb to smooth the outside of your ponytail.

Step 5: Next, you’re going to wrap the ponytail around one of your hands and roll it up towards the head. Begin to tuck the ends of the hair inside the bun until you have a nice roll shape.

Step 6: Take your pins and use them to secure the bun. You can pull out some pieces once the flip bun is secured in order to make it fuller and more relaxed.

Step 7: Secure the bun with hairspray and style the face frame pieces as desired. You’ll have the perfect bun to take you through your day or event.

Tips and Tricks for Styling Bun Updos

Sometimes bun updos are a little easier said than done. Here are some of our best tips and tricks for styling them that you can use when you go to do your flip bun updo!

Make sure there are no harsh lines

Use your comb to ensure there are no harsh lines or unwanted bumps of hair throughout your head. You should work to ensure the hair is nice and flat and that it flatters your face.

Be careful with where your bun sits

You will get a totally different look depending on where you decide to position your bun. We suggest doing the flip bun updo a bit lower, but you could always play around with doing it higher as well!

Don’t forget to add the volume

A bun updo can be hard to nail without a bit of added volume. Use backcombing or teasing to your advantage to help the hair take up more space. This will also help with the texture of the hair and ensure it stays put once you’ve pinned it in place!

Style your front pieces

After you’ve created the perfect bun, don’t forget about your front pieces! You might add a bit of curl to help loosen up the look of the bun and add an elegant touch.

Other Bun Updos to Try

Now that you’re an expert on the flip bun, let’s explore some other types of bun hairstyles.

High bun

The high bun can be as formal or casual as you want it to be! Comb back your locks into a ponytail and then twirl the ponytail until you have a nice bun shape. Secure it with elastic and some bobby pins and you’ll be good to go!

Top knot bun

If you’re in a pinch for time, the top knot is a good go-to. It looks classy and sophisticated and requires almost no time! Get your hair spray ready to seal down those flyaways and pin the bun well so it stays secure.

Half-up, half-down bun

If you want to wear your hair down, but also want to get it out of your face then a half-up, the half-down bun is a great choice! Separate your hair and create a nice messy bun on top of your head. We love this one for a casual look!

Classic low bun

The low bun is a style that’s super versatile. You can take this look from the gym to a big party at night. All you have to do is refresh it throughout the day and you’ll be all set for a day-to-night hairstyle.

Play around with this style to see what suits you best. Slicked back might be the way to go or adding some loose and tousled pieces around the face could be extra beautiful.

Curly messy bun

If you have curly hair then the messy bun is the perfect bun for you! This one is easy as you can throw your hair on top of your head into a bun and secure it with an elastic.

The looser the curls are with this look the better! We love seeing a nice, full messy bun complete with cutely curled face-framing pieces.

Space buns

Have you got on board with the space buns trend yet? If you haven’t, this might be the time!

Separate the hair into two pigtails and then wrap the hair around on each side until you have a nice knot. Pin it just like you would a regular top knot.

There are tons of ways to spice up your space buns. Whether it’s with braids or cute accessories the possibilities are endless!

Braided bun

Braids and buns are a true match made in heaven! There are tons of different ways to do a braided bun. One way we recommend is simply braiding your hair and then twisting the braid into a nice, simple bun. This helps to add a bit of interest without making things overly complicated.

This one looks great as a high or low bun!

French braid bun

Another type of braided bun is the French braid bun. French braid your hair down the back of your head and then secure the ends of it into a nice tight bun.

Side bun

Another way to spice things up when it comes to your bun is by switching up its position of it! Tie your hair to the side with an elastic and then twist two sections of the ponytail together until you reach the bottom of it.

This one looks extra chic when you pull out a few hairs to frame the face.

Chignon bun

The chignon is one of the most sophisticated buns you can do! You’ll pin the hair into a knot and secure it at the nape of the neck.

This is a particularly great style for those with shorter hair as all the little ends get tucked in!

Knot bun

To create the knot bun you’ll start by using a comb to put the hair into a low ponytail. From there, divide the hair in half and twist each of the two sections. Bring the left section over the other piece and put it in your right hand. Bring the right section underneath and continue doing so until you have a nice knot.

Pin it in place and you’ll have a stunning knot bun!

Bun with accessories

Add a little something to your bun with beautiful accessories! You might go for flowers, gems, or even some cute little pearl clips. Be strategic with the placement of your accessories as you will want them to be visible without overpowering the overall look of your bun.

Retro bun

This bun hairstyle is straight out of the 60s! It’s cute but also sophisticated and you’re sure to love the volume it provides.

Add a hair scarf for some extra flair and to make this one extra special!
